The Panacea of BIM (Part 1 of Many)

A month ago, I had the opportunity to attend a social event where Jason McLennan brought up a powerful quote from legendary Buckminster Fuller:

"You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete."

The quote totally stuck with me and made me think a lot about BIM. Here we have BIM: a disruptive process powered by various tools that let us go beyond mere documentation to a whole new level of understanding, design and collaboration in the AEC industry. But still, there are many firms reluctant to make the switch (and perhaps even more who have half-heartedly "taken the plunge" after being shoved by the pressure from the owner or design team).

So, is BIM not compelling enough to make the existing model obsolete? How would Bucky feel about BIM?

I will share my thoughts in a follow-up post. For now, I welcome your feedback.
